V festival

Not the best of gigs, really... and far from the best of reviews. Twat.

Setlist:

Glitter and Trauma
Justboy
MRI
Now I'm Everyone
Some Kind of Wizard
57

From Channel 4 'music'
"You've got to feel slightly sorry for Biffy Clyro.
They arrive on stage with a huge bang and, ten seconds into their first song, the power drops out and the entire Channel 4 Stage falls under a spooky blanket of quietness. After scissor-kicking a mic stand, the band flee the stage while some men with tattoos identify the problem. With everything fixed the band burst back onto the stage and launch into their opening song again, only for the sound to disappear YET AGAIN. They are not very happy about this and promptly clear off. An announcement informs us that "the power keeps tripping out". At least something is. After another ten minutes of silence Biffy are back on stage. This is good news because it means they can perform their pop songs, but this delay unfortunately means that they lose their opportunity to have the no doubt brilliant remainder of their set reviewed by Slashmusic, because by the time it really gets going your correspondent has to be somewhere else - that somewhere else being in front of a laptop computer writing this very review.

One good thing about being here instead of watching Biffy Clyro is that we have just seen Preston Ordinary Boy walk in front of the Slashmusic gazebo. He is having a chat with someone and wearing a Man From Del Monte hat. Biffy Clyro are probably off stage by now. If they are still going when we get back to the stage we will be sure to let you know."

Compass Point, Coopers Field, Cardiff

Yet another festival headline slot for the trio, and yet another apparently slightly marred by poor sound - although a long and varied setlist still ensured it was more than worth the while of those who came in support...

The setlist itself was pretty unusual, returning some older live classics such as Christophers River and Stress On The Sky (last heard at the Edinburgh Exchange gig last year, fact fans) to the fray, and again trying out some of the newer material, namely the heavy sounding Semi-Mental, and the more experimental sounding Now I'm Everyone.

T in the Park, Balado Kinross

The band make their fifth appearance at TITP? (As the article on RCT-Music shows...

By all accounts this seems to have been one of the most highly regarded T In The Parks for a long time, with everyone from John Q Ned up to the mighty Edith Bowman (looking a tad sozzled on the backstage footage) claiming it was one of the best ever...

...the festival got a 5 star write up in The Times on the Monday afterwards.

Anyway, the Biff seem to have a good crowd despite slipping down the bill slightly from last year, with the blazing sunshine only adding to the feelgood factor. Result.

Setlist:
Glitter and Trauma
Semi-mental (new song)
Justboy
My Recovery Injection
Eradicate The Doubt
All the Way Down Ch1/Prologue
57

57 - possibly the ultimate festival song?

The band also released a new set of T-shirts for this years festival, of which I am exceedingly jealous. If there any left after the shows, then they'll be available on the band's online shop , which you should visit lots. Yes. :) Quote of the day, overheard at the merch desk undoubtedly goes to a friend of an acquaintance, who said (in regard to the ticket prices): "£15? give that to james and tell him to get a fucking haircut." legendary indeed. :-)

Oxegen Festival, Ireland

Appearing alongside the likes of Interpol, Hal, Athlete and *cough* Ian Brown (flogging a dead horse, anyone?) and the lovely Stephen Fretwell today in the Green Room tent at Ireland's Oxegen festival. It also appeared to be the debut of the new song 'As Dust Dances', which they played acoustically in another tent (the cunningly named acoustic tent...) later, as well as 'Got Wrong'. I will kill for a video of the new song if anyone has one!

T in the Park running Times

The band will be on at 12.40 on Sunday - no longer first on.

Bizarrely, there's no running times on the TITP website. Ah well.

Truckfest Times

As you probably know, Biffy are playing Truckfest on Saturday July 23rd, closing the Truck stage. Lineups and running times can be found here

The festival is now sold out as well, although I'm sure there are still some up for grabs on Daily Info, and apparently a girl called Sara Hawley is selling a couple on her myspace page. Go find her!

Reading 2003 Video

Some live video footage of Biffy at the Carling Weekend in 2003. The Carling Weekend is run on two sites simultaneously (Reading, and Leeds Bramhan Park). This was given to me, but i'm not entirely sure where the original rip has come from; it's obviously been taken from the TV feeds, as it's originally been broadcast quality, which is never a bad thing... Songs here are Eradicate the Doubt and 57 (of course!)

This festival was the first time the band have shared the stage with Metallica (and Primal Scream... but we'll not talk about them...), but hopefully not the last...

Kerrang Day of Rock

(In the festivals category rather loosely...)

2nd year running. Particular highlights of this years gig included some songs from the (then) forthcoming Infinity Land, and a young lass with 'insert cock here' and an arrow pointing to her mouth, drawn on her face. I'm sure your parents are so proud.

Review - BukandSkit festival

Finally the wait was over. Drunken girls stumbled, young boys harassed the Funeral posse who had popped over for a gander, and tensions were running high for the headlining band, Biffy Clyro.

But the wait was inevitably worth it. The trio bursting straight into 'Bodies In Flight,' one of their more complex and experimental songs.
New single 'Glitter and Trauma' raised a few eyebrows. - Of Biffy Clyro
Next, monumental love song '57' had heart beats racing at break neck speed, vocalist Simon's affectionate voice caressing his lyrics, whilst brothers Ben and James provided soaring echoes of angst - a truly beautiful song.
New single 'Glitter and Trauma' raised a few eyebrows, its cheesy title and disco-punk intro, complete with disco lights, not exactly customary of the Scottish three.
However, all hope was not lost as the meaty metal edge of the verse signified the return of the true Biffy style.
Biffy have seemingly single-handedly created for themselves a genre that combines the emotional awareness of emo, the catchy yet fragile tendencies of indie-rock and the searing riffs of metal, best exemplified in 'Convex, Concave,' that bands like Next Nine Days and The Big Sleep can only hope to touch upon.

Biffy's talent lies far above the monotony of punk rock, they have managed to create music appealing to a wide range of audiences, yet still remain out of the mainstream limelight, something that I hope they can maintain in their careers.
Catch their UK tour in September and October this year.

It was a perfect ending to the day. Glastonbury may well have entertained with some of the world's most renowned acts, but the Bukandskit Fest entertained with the Best of British and the best of British to come.

Review - Download Festival

From: E festivals

Scottish emo stars, Biffy Clyro, have risen to fame in recent years and have become a household name. Running half an hour late, they walk out to a rapturous applause – despite the fact that I hear a few people go “Who are these guys? It doesn’t look like Static-X”.

The threesome get off to a good start with the powerful guitar riffs and soaring vocals that have given them emo-superstar status. After the first half of the set, however, something just seems to go wrong. My interest dissipates and the vocals move from soaring to painful.

The crowd love this band. To them there is very little that BC could ever do wrong. This was shown when they played at the Limp Bizkit gig a year ago – they may have sounded aweful but the crowd didn’t care. To a non-fan, however, the set ends tediously.

There is definite potential from this band, but almost a year after I last saw them, there are few signs of performance improvement. Perhaps it’s best to enjoy them from the comfort of your CD player for now.

Interview - Download 2004

From Virtual Festivals.com

F caught up with UK rockers Biffy Clyro backstage at Download 2004

VF: What have you been up to the past few months?
BC: We’ve been finishing off our third album, just putting the finishing touches to it like getting it mastered and doing the artwork.

VF: What kind of feel has the new record got?
BC: We wanted to make it slightly more diverse just to keep it interesting for us and for the fans, but still keep it sounding like a Biffy record.

VF: Are you trying to incorporate any other sounds?
BC: Well, we’re always looking to do that. I couldn’t mention any bands off hand because there are too many to mention, but we’re always looking to expand our sound.

VF: How do you feel about the success of the last album?
BC: Yeah it did really well, it would have been nice for people further a field to listen to it, maybe in America and in Europe but in this country we were really happy with the way the fans received it and the way the press received it.

VF: The artwork for the new record is a bit racy isn’t it?
BC: That was just a bit of a fluke. We were sitting having dinner in Marseille, as you do, and we saw the print on the wall and we thought that’s the one, and the rest is history as they say. By the way we like clichés a lot!

VF: We heard there is a side project in the offing called When the World Explodes?
BC: No, it’s just me and my mate messing around, so it’s not really a side project. It wont be released or anything.

VF: How are you finding Download Festival?
BC: Yeah excellent, though we’ve experienced very little of the festival so far, but we’ve had a wash and went to the signing tent which was cool.

VF: Were there a lot of people there to see you?
BC: We thought there would be about 5 but in the end there were 10 so we were impressed! There were quite a lot of people wearing Cradle of filth t-shirts, which is a bit worrying, but you can like Cradle of Filth and Biffy – so that’s cool.

VF: Are there any bands you really want to see?
BC: Yeah. We're going to see Your Codename is: Milo and thisGirl.

VF: Actually they’re on now!
BC: Well we’d better wrap this up then, thanks. [runs off towards the Barfly Stage!]

TITP Main Stage

Main Stage, TITP

Biffy's first foray onto the main stage, having been in various tents in preceding years. Far from the bands best performance (and a marked contrast to the performances in the warm-up shows in Glasgow and Arbroath), the set is probably most notable for what seemed to be a slight loss of control during the final section of "...andnowtheaction", where it seemed Simon and James disagreed over who got a mic, and simon jumped onto the drum riser, missed his footing and bounced rib first off the riser. The band all seemed fine at the signing they did in the NME signing tent (of all things!) later in the day though, Simon remarking when asked that he hadn't hurt himself. God knows how...

The band get signed!

The band's first appearance at the festival. It was here that they were spotted by Beggars Banquet Records on the unsigned stage, and were fairly promptly signed, thus neatly fulfilling the purpose of the stage.
